Agarwood, often referred to as "liquid gold," is a highly valuable resinous wood produced by species of the Aquilaria tree when infected by specific fungi or bacteria. In Northeast India, the natural agarwood zones include Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, regions characterized by favorable climatic conditions, dense forests, and biodiversity.
Aquilaria malaccensis, a prominent species in these regions, naturally produces agarwood as a defense mechanism against infections or injuries. Traditionally, these trees were left to undergo natural infection, often resulting in high-quality resin formation over decades. The humid climate, abundant rainfall, and fertile soil in Northeast India contribute to the thriving growth of Aquilaria trees and the subsequent formation of agarwood.
The region's indigenous communities have long been engaged in cultivating and harvesting agarwood, which is used for perfumes, incense, and traditional medicines. However, overharvesting and deforestation have threatened natural agarwood zones, pushing the species towards endangerment. Sustainable practices, such as artificial inoculation and regulated harvesting, are now being adopted to conserve these natural resources.
Efforts to protect agarwood zones in Northeast India are vital for preserving the ecological balance and supporting local livelihoods dependent on this precious natural commodity.
